Situated on the Big Island of Hawaii, the district of Hilo is divided into two parts; North Hilo (Hilo ‘Akau) and South Hilo District (Hilo Hema). The North Hilo district is filled with cultural sites, shops, and unique attractions. The Hilo District stretches for 58 miles from Hilo Bay to Waiakea-Uka.

Hilo is the only place considered a city on the Big Island due to its large population. Residents in the North Hilo area are spread across various towns and localities such as Mauna Kea, Ninole, and ʻŌʻōkala and many of the locals in the district live along the Wailoa and Wailuku rivers. The North Hilo District is admired for its relaxed and laid back lifestyle as opposed to commercialized and industrial cities in Hawaii like Honolulu on the island of Oahu.

There are a number of beautiful places to explore in the region of North Hilo. The region is highlighted by its natural features like Rainbow falls – one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Big Island. Another piece of tropical paradise in North Hilo is Coconut Island, found off the coast of Hilo, known as Mokuola meaning “Island of Life” in the Hawaiian language Moku means “Island” and Ola means “Life”. Mokuola island and the Queen Liliuokalani Gardens are enjoyed year-round by area residents and visitors.

If you crave an authentic experience of the island of Hawaii, then North Hilo is perfect for you. Although it may feel like you are a world away when you are in this tropical paradise, North Hilo is extremely accessible for residents. There is a range of places for residents to slow down and connect with themselves, the Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens is a relaxing Japanese style garden and teahouse, thought to be the largest of its kind outside of Japan. While the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo hosts over 80 species of unique fauna in a natural environment.

North Hilo’s climate is hot and humid throughout most of the year. On average, the temperature remains between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, occasionally reaching up into the 90s on a hot summer day. Residents enjoy tropical sunny skies for much of the year but the district does receive around 50 inches of rainfall every year.

Hilo Bay has open farm markets where vendors sell locally made goods and fresh produce. The Hilo farmers market is a charming place filled with artisan crafts, jewels, artwork, plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, tropical coffee, flowers, honey, and bread. In downtown Hilo, the main town in North Hilo, residents can enjoy a range of boutique shops, restaurants, art galleries, and museums.

North Hilo is a great spot for families to live and play. There is a range of great schools in the district for children to attend and plenty of job opportunities are available for residents in the tourism, retail, hospitality, and infrastructure sectors.
