Home to some of the Big Island’s best beaches, the South Kohala moku or district plays host to many beautiful resorts and luxury properties. The area is filled with attractions and activities and is considered the Gold Coast of the Island. Residents enjoy the beautiful view of emerald golf course slopes, the pacific ocean, and picture-perfect white-sand beaches.
The South Kohala area is 351.7 square miles in size and home to an array of historical and cultural sights, a major factor in why thousands of tourists arrive here every year. More people inhabited the South Kohala district in its inception than do today. The influx of tourists has forced many locals to move to more off-the-grid locations on the Island of Hawaii.
Visitors come to South Kohala to see ancient Hawaiian sights such as the ancient Mookini Luakini Heiau. This temple was formerly a place where kings pray and offer human sacrifices.
Heading toward the west side, you will come across the Kamehameha I Birth Site, this sacred site is the birthplace of the great leader circa 1758.
Living on the Big Island can be fun-filled, relaxing, and magical. Spectacular mountain and ocean views are on offer all over South Kohala. There is plenty of fun to be had on the beaches of South Kohala. Snorkeling, canoeing, and swimming are popular among locals and tourists here. The reef drops off more gradually here than on the Kona coast, so residents frequently spot dolphins, whales, manta rays, turtles, and sharks playing in the ocean. Other popular attractions in South Kohala include ancient petroglyphs, fishponds, village sites, and historic trails.
